Currently the community of Nuevo Progresso does not have a formal school and have been renting two rooms out of a house in the community. While there is a school available to them, it is more than an hour away and the children would have to cross a very busy and dangerous highway to get there. The government has provided two teachers to the community and they have worked tirelessly to try to provide resources for the children.
The locals speak both Kaqchikel and Spanish and both are taught in the schools and spoken at community meetings. Both the community leader and the school principal are women who have organized themselves to provide projects and resources for this small community of aprox 250 people .
