Chipila

Chipila

The community of Chipila first heard of bottle schools through the television, and because news was circulating that the surrounding communities of San Martin Jilotepeque were having inaugurations of their own completed eco-brick classrooms. Members of Chipila took it upon themselves to investigate how to get support in improving their own school, Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta.

The school has 190 students, 167 of which are elementary school level, and 23 in kindergarten. Currently, the school can only rely on their 6 official classrooms, but also utilize a bodega as a makeshift classroom. There are a total of 8 teachers, 6 of which have actual classrooms, another teaches out of the bodega and the last shares a classroom with another grade. This community aims to complete 2 classrooms for the first grade. These 2 classrooms will serve Chipila since there aren’t enough classrooms which is not allowing students to concentrate. Additionally, we want to make sure this elementary school does not have to rely on teaching within a bodega for a teaching/learning environment.
