In the community of Candelaria, the children of the 100 families residing in the region of Upper Candelaria currently walk 4 miles each day in order to attend the local school located in Lower Candelaria. Due to the distance of the school and the isolated and rocky path that they must take, many of Upper Candelaria’s parents are hesitant to send their children to the school alone and thus these children never begin their education.

As a solution to this situation, the community has solicited the support of the local Mayor who has agreed to provide a Kindergarten teacher for the children of Upper Candelaria. After seeing the success of the Pilot School, the community has become committed to constructing a Kindergarten classroom in Upper Candelaria that will provide a secure location where the students will be able to receive their education.

In order to cut costs and reduce the existing contamination in Candelaria, the community will be utilizing Hug it Forward’s innovative Bottle School Technology to construct the school with the use of 5,000 1.5 liter plastic soda bottles and a total of 2,050 pounds of plastic waste.

The success of this project will help to provide a future for the 84 children that currently live in Upper Candelaria, and will serve as an example as to what can be accomplished when a community comes together.
