Diane Winkler’s Bottle School Fundraiser!

On January 23th, 2019, our sweet mother, Diane Winkler peacefully passed away. I am a true believer that you can store your history in any way you want, and I want to have her passing have meaning in a sustainable, wonderful way. “Grandy” as she was known to by her 11 amazing grandchildren, was a former junior high English teacher and a voracious reader. I have to believe she set a world record for the number of books she consumed! I can’t think of a better way to honor her than building a school in her memory and honor.

Recently, I felt compelled to join a group called Hug It Forward, a most wonderful non-profit that builds schools made out of recycled bottles! We had the opportunity to work side–by-side with the community who had collected 10,000 water bottles and stuffed them with inorganic trash. These eco-blocks became the insulation or wall for the school, covered over with cement! Not only is this an affordable way to help build schools and education, it also results in a cleaner community and better air quality from less burning trash…It’s a win, win, win!

Now I am hoping to return and build a school in honor of our wonderful mom and Grandy. The goal is to raise $21,000. This will fund the building of a 3 classroom school! What a deal!

Additionally, those of you who are interested will have the opportunity to actually go to Guatemala and help build the school and meet the community!!!! (More details to follow on that at a later date.)
